The Top Items Stolen from Cars and How to Save Them

Across America, car owners are finding new ways to defend themselves against car thieves. Unfortunately, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, every 45 seconds a motor vehicle is stolen in the United States. This means that over 700,000 cars are stolen every year.

Even if that’s a staggering number, it doesn’t include all of the minor to moderate break-ins reported every day. Combine both numbers and we’re sure you’ll find plenty of reasons not to take your car theft protection lightly.

Let’s look at the top items stolen from vehicles and the best ways to secure them.

Top 7 Items Stolen from Cars

  1. Car Registration

With over 700,000 cars stolen annually, it’s important to keep your car safe and secure. In fact, whenever a thief is looking to steal your car, one of the first items they’ll look for is your vehicle registration. Typically, car owners are prone to leaving their registration inside of their glove box. Since you need your registration in your vehicle at all times, the easiest way to secure your registration is by upgrading your factory glove box for our high-security alternative.

Our 16-gauge steel glove box is an ideal replacement for the plastic or cardboard factory glove box. This glove box can be used to secure a number of smaller items, including your vehicle registration. The glove box also features our patented latch system that allows the glove box to be latched shut without having to be locked and unlocked each time it’s accessed.

  2. Cell Phones

One of the most valuable items in your car is your cell phone. Cell phones are typically full of passwords, credit card numbers, and other valuable information, along with selling for a pretty penny on their own. If you’re prone to leaving your cell phone inside your car one of the best ways to secure it and other items is installing our security console insert.

Our steel console insert provides style, security, and convenience in one package. While maintaining the refined curves of the OEM console, the Tuffy console insert transforms your OEM console into a heavy-duty lockable storage area utilizing our Pry-Guard locking system.

  3. Wallets and Purses

One of the first things thieves look for when breaking into a car is money, credit cards, and other valuables that are typically stored in wallets and purses. Our Security Glove Boxes are customized to fit a variety of trucks, jeeps, and SUVs. Made from 16-gauge steel, these high-security glove boxes are the ideal replacement for the plastic factory glove boxes that don’t often ward off thieves. It also features our patented latch system that allows the glove box to be latched shut without having to be locked and unlocked each time it’s accessed.

  4. Laptops

Many car owners transport their laptop in their car and can often leave it for hours on end inside the car for prying thieves to steal. Don’t let that happen to you. Secure your laptop using our Laptop Computer Security Lockbox. Specifically designed to provide a secure and protected place to lock-up portable computers, our exclusive Pry-Guard locking system provides the security needed to protect expensive computer equipment.

The unique design of our laptop lockbox incorporates an exclusive hinging system and welded steel construction. Grade 8 mounting hardware is included with mounting holes provided for a bottom or a back-flush surface mounting, so the lockbox can be mounted behind the rear seat in a pickup truck or virtually any other place it can fit.

  5. Catalytic Converters

Many thieves are looking for unique opportunities to earn a few bucks. Instead of breaking into your vehicle, some thieves rip off parts to sell for a profit. A popular item among thieves is catalytic converters since they contain valuable metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. The cost of these metals has soared in recent years, making it a gold mine for thieves. Don’t let them get to yours. Secure your vehicle using our hood lock.

Our hood locks use a simple one-piece design that secures your hood and deters thieves from walking away with valuable under hood parts such as batteries, intakes, superchargers, etc. Keep your costly investments safe with a Tuffy hood lock.

  6. Bags of New Purchases

Often times thieves break into cars when they see shopping bags through the windows. Since the items are likely brand-new, thieves are able to return or resell the items quickly for a profit. Keep your trunk/ cargo area secure from thieves with our cargo drawers and cargo lockboxes. Depending on your vehicle we have a number of options that can fit your exact needs.

  7. Truck Tailgate

Thieves can easily lift your tailgate off of your car. This can leave you with a hefty bill for buying a replacement. Our tailgate protector deters tailgate theft through a simple, yet effective cover which prevents the tailgate from being lifted off. Installation of our truck tailgate protector is simple and can be completed in five minutes or less.

Top 5 Jeep Aftermarket Customizations

So, you've just bought a Jeep. You've taken the plunge and joined the community where many come but few survive. Whether you're armed with a new or used Jeep, 2-door or 4, customized or factory, you understand the excitement of signing on the dotted line and getting handed the keys to your very own adventure vehicle. But, as every first-time owner quickly learns, making your Jeep your own quickly becomes the next feat in a line of conquests.

However, tackling the big customization giant isn't always easy. There comes a long line of decisions to consider. Should you take the jump into a complete customization overhaul with suspension kits, supped-up tires, and winches? Or do you keep your Jeep 'as is' without any aftermarket products? Luckily, there a few spots to focus on when starting out that won't leave your pocketbook empty, but let you add some major personalized touches.

Let's look at our top six aftermarket customizations for Jeeps:

  1. Security and Storage

What drew you to Jeep? Although Jeep is the most profitable brand worldwide for the FCA, it's not known for its security and storage. In fact, it's rated pretty poorly in that department. Jeeps aren't designed for that. From limited cargo space and interior security, most Jeep owners struggle to find the space and security they need. Luckily, there are a few aftermarket solutions that help with that.

Tuffy Security Products offer an array of security and storage options customized to fit your exact make and model of Jeep. From solid 16-gauge steel lockable consoles to portable lockboxes that perfectly fit under your seats, Tuffy offers it all. They even have cargo storage options that give you additional space by making interior spaces more accessible and usable with customized products.

  2. Heavy Duty Bumpers

One of the main things that many first-time owners update is their front and rear bumpers. Why? Well, Jeep's plastic factory bumpers aren't very useful. Whether you use your Jeep on the off-road or the main ones, the factory bumpers on your Jeep won't provide the day-to-day type of protection you need. Update those flimsy bumpers with heavy duty bumpers that provide the protection a Jeep should and a customized look that every Jeep owner wants.

  3. Customized Soft Top

Another area of frustration for Jeep owners? Soft tops. Although the factory version offers a unique open-air driving experience, it's also difficult to manage and provides little in terms of safety. Customized soft tops by Bestop give you all the convenience of a soft top without any of the hassles. Don't worry about installation either. Bestop's soft tops are consumer rated for easy-installation and overall reliability.

  4. Quality LED Lights

Ready to take your Jeep into the night? Not with those lack-luster factory lights. Once you switch to LEDs, you'll never go back. Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) offer the highest amount of voltage you need at all hours of the day. However, get the wrong set of LED lights and you'll draw way too much power from your battery. Luckily the guys over at Baja Designs have perfected the craft. Their LED lights are customized to fit your specific make and model of Jeep and aren't too pricey either.

  5. Hood Latches

One of the first things you'll notice when driving your Jeep is the amount of hood movement that happens as soon as you hit a higher speed. Get rid of this issue by replacing the rubber latches from the factory with heavier-duty, lockable hood latches. These will reduce the amount of movement happening on your hood and provide the extra security you'll need to keep things safe and secure.

No matter which aftermarket customization you decide on, making your Jeep yours is the best part of joining the Jeeping community. Find what works for you and go for it!

All New Jeep Wrangler JL Tailgate Lockbox

Tuffy Security Products Adds New Tailgate Lockbox for the Jeep® Wrangler JL

CORTEZ, Colo. – Tuffy Security Products has expanded its line of Jeep® Wrangler JL products to include the Model 349, a heavy duty, high security tailgate lockbox. The new product mounts directly to the interior of the Jeep JL’s tailgate using the tailgate rail mounts, allowing JL owners to have added secure storage for their gear.

Crafted from welded 16-gauge steel, the Model 349 comes equipped with two removable shelves so JL owners can organize smaller items on the shelves when installed as well as a door which folds down to create a work table, that supports up to 40 pounds.
